Quick Summary / Abstract: Staff will present a new course for consideration and approval.
Background: The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) is committed to developing courses that provide students with a wide-range of opportunities to prepare students to “contribute and thrive in a changing world.” Our Board of Education encourages creating new courses and updating courses that are engaging to students and prepares them for success in the 21st Century. The new course includes the California State Standards and supports students in their pursuit of college and career readiness.
Status As we strive to remain competitive in meeting student and parent requests for rigorous college preparatory coursework, career technical education, and elective opportunities that will prepare students for multiple options beyond high school, we collaborate closely with high school teachers and administrators to keep our current courses updated and new courses prepared for Board approval.

In an effort to continue to ensure content reflects current standards and is relevant and applicable, new course listed below is being presented for consideration and approval.

The IB Music Group Performance SL course will provide students an opportunity to meet the visual and performing arts requirement of the IB Diploma Programme. The IB Music SL course supports the the goal of articulation with the elementary and middle school IB Programmes.

New Course:

International Baccalaureate (IB) Music Group Performance Standard Level (SL) - The IB Music Group Performance SL course seeks to develop students’ knowledge and potential as musicians, both personally and collaboratively. IB Diploma Programme music students are required to study musical perception and actively listen to a wide range of music cultures across various time periods. Students develop their understanding of musical elements, including form and structure, notations, musical terminology and context, as well as aural skills. Through the course of study, students become aware of how musicians work and communicate. In addition, the course enables students to develop perceptual and analytical skills and develop their knowledge and technique as musicians. IB Music Group Performance SL will be offered within the Symphonic Band, Orchestra and/or Jazz Band sections as a blended course, giving students options in which to pursue the IB Music course. Additionally, in IB Music Group Performance SL, students who choose to take the IB exam will submit a recording selected from pieces presented during two or more public group performances that is 20–30 minutes in total length for the two performances
Fiscal Impact Instructional materials will be purchased from the District-established Instructional Materials budget using Local Control Funding Formula dollars.
