Ukulele for Beginners DRAFT 5.3.18.pdf
Quick Summary / Abstract: Staff will present a new course for consideration and approval.
Background: The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) is committed to developing courses that provide students with a wide-range of opportunities to prepare students to “contribute and thrive in a changing world.” Our Board of Education encourages creating new courses and updating courses that are engaging to students and prepare students for success in the 21st Century. The new course includes the National Standards for Music Education.
Status As we strive to remain competitive in meeting student and parent requests for rigorous college preparatory coursework, career technical education, and elective opportunities that will prepare students for multiple options beyond high school, we collaborate closely with teachers and administrators to keep our current courses updated and new courses prepared for Board approval.

In an effort to increase music education opportunities to students who may not choose a traditional ensemble group, the following new course is being presented for consideration and approval:

New Course:

Ukulele for Beginners – Ukulele for Beginners is as an introduction to the ukulele and provides students with instant access to making music on the instrument. Focus points will be reading music, strumming, and rhythms. The course will be split into several units that cover various aspects of understanding the instrument and the music that can be created with it. Each day, students will be led through a routine of tuning their ukuleles, warming-up, group instruction, and group practicing and playing. Students will also learn basic maintenance of the instrument, including how to change the strings and maintain tuning. Throughout the course, students will keep a journal to record and reflect upon their process of learning.
Fiscal Impact Instructional materials will be purchased from the District-established Instructional Materials budget using Local Control Funding Formula dollars. Instruments were acquired with the unsecured assets from the former Charter School.
