Quick Summary / Abstract: Staff will present one new course for consideration and approval.
Background: The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) is committed to developing courses that provide students with a wide-range of opportunities to prepare students to “contribute and thrive in a changing world.” Our Board of Education encourages creating new courses and updating courses that are engaging to students and prepare students for success in the 21st Century. The new course includes the California State Standards and supports students in their pursuit of college and career readiness.
Status As we strive to remain competitive in meeting student and parent requests for rigorous college preparatory coursework, career technical education, and elective opportunities that will prepare students for multiple options beyond high school, we collaborate closely with teachers and administrators to keep our current courses updated and new courses prepared for Board approval.

In an effort to increase foreign language opportunities for middle school students in a highly engaging environment, at a pace more appropriate for young middle school students, the following new course is presented for consideration and approval:

New Course:

Introduction to Spanish – Introduction to Spanish will prepare students to be more comfortable in a Spanish 1 course. It is designed to acquaint first-time Spanish learners with vocabulary, question and sentence formations, clothing, school, family, food, and animals. This course will provide students with a general introduction to the Spanish language. Cultural activities will be included to introduce the students to Hispanic/Latino culture including music, sports, educational films, art, holidays, and traditions. Students will do complete a research project on a Spanish speaking country. There are both oral and written components to this project. This course presents the learner with all four modes of communication: listening, speaking, reading, and writing within a cultural context.
Fiscal Impact Instructional materials will be purchased from the District-established Instructional Materials budget using Local Control Funding Formula dollars.
