Resolution in Support of Census 2020 Final.pdf
Quick Summary / Abstract: As Livermore, our State, and our nation approach Census 2020, we recognize the importance of ensuring an accurate count of residents. The number of people living in California determines the amount of representation our state has in the House of Representatives. An accurate count also ensures that federal funds are allocated equitably to provide services to those who qualify for them. Such a resolution underscores the need for an accurate count and affirms our commitment to encouraging our community to participate in the census.
Background: Every ten years, residents of our country are counted so that our government leaders have an accurate understanding of the number of people who need services, thereby impacting the allocation of resources. (For example, an increase in population in a certain area could result in an additional fire department being added.) An accurate count ensures equitable representation in Congress and equitable funding for residents of our state.

Members of our community will receive emails or letters asking them to participate in Census 2020, with April 1, 2020 being the official "Census Day." Throughout the month of April, residents will be asked to respond by phone, email, or online survey; those who have not responded will receive personal visits by census workers at their home addresses, starting in May.

District staff has been working in tandem with the Alameda County Office of Education as well as with the City of Livermore, the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District, and other community organizations to emphasize the importance of ensuring an accurate census count and to plan for community outreach that promotes participation. The organizations in Livermore have agreed to come together and encourage participation in the census during the week of April 19th through 25th. We are naming the week "Livermore Counts!"

Because all families with children have an established relationship with their local school district, they will trust us to provide support and assurance if they have questions about the census. Our staff members will be working with our community to provide facts as well as opportunities for easy participation. For example, our websites will share information about the census, our schools will have a computer that parents/guardians can use to complete the census online, and our parent liaisons will provide support for those who may have questions about how to respond to the census survey or who may need translation services in order to complete.

The resolution articulates our commitment to supporting an accurate count during Census 2020.
