Quick Summary / Abstract: Staff will provide a recommendation for Adoption of High School Instructional Materials.
Background: Our District adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in November 2013. These standards have become the basis for all science instruction in our schools. These rigorous standards and framework help prepare students for college and careers by emphasizing problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Since the introduction of NGSS, all science instruction has centered on the three dimensions of learning - practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas.
Status During the 2019-20 school year, a Pilot Adoption Committee was formed to review potential high school biology instructional materials that would incorporate the Next Generation Science Standards and provide the completion of the three-year science instruction model. After a thorough review of instructional materials, the Committee agreed to pilot the materials published by Savvas (formerly Pearson) and authored by Miller & Levine. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the pilot, originally scheduled for the spring trimester of 2020, was postponed.

At the beginning of this school year, the six-week pilot was restarted and concluded in early October. The Committee consisted of five high school biology teachers, three from Granada High School and two from Livermore High School. After piloting materials at the high school level, the Pilot Adoption Committee met to review the instructional materials. After careful discussion and evaluation, the Committee is recommending Experience Biology: The Living Earth by Miller & Levine for adoption as the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) instructional curriculum for high school biology.

The instructional materials are available for public viewing at both comprehensive high schools, Vineyard Alternative School, and in the Curriculum Department at our District Office.
Fiscal Impact The instructional materials will be purchased out of restricted Lottery Funds. The estimated cost for the high school biology instructional materials and professional development is $212,280 and consumable materials will be “gratis” for eight years beginning the 2021-22 school year.
Superintendent's Recommendation: Approve the High School Biology Instructional Materials Adoption, beginning the 2020-21 school year.
