Quick Summary / Abstract: Staff will provide a recommendation for Adoption of 6-12 English Language Arts / English Language Development Instructional Materials.
Background: The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) adopted the California Standards in June of 2012. These standards have become the basis for all English Language Arts / English Language Development instruction in our District. The California State Board of Education adopted the revised English Language Arts (ELA) / English Language Development (ELD) Framework, aligned to the California Standards for English Language Arts and the California English Language Development Standards, in July 2014. These rigorous standards and framework help prepare students for college and careers by emphasizing problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. To support districts with the adoption process, the State also provides districts with an Adoption Toolkit: English Language Arts/Literacy and English Language Development and Guidelines for Piloting Textbooks and Instructional Materials.
Status Earlier this school year, our District formed a Secondary ELA/ELD Pilot Adoption Committee to review, pilot, and evaluate English Language Arts materials for both middle and high school. While the California Department of Education provides a listing of approved publishers for middle school, it does not do so for high school. For our middle schools, we chose materials to pilot from the approved list. We then determined which of these publishers also provide materials for high school and chose materials from those publishers to pilot.

The Committee consisted of 26 teachers from across grade levels 6th – 12th, as well as Special Education and English Language Development, and included representatives from each school site. The Committee utilized the California English Language Arts (ELA)/English Language Development (ELD) Framework (2015), the Adoption Toolkit (2015), and the Guidelines for Piloting Textbooks and Instructional Materials (2015) to guide the process.

After piloting materials at both the middle school and high school levels, the Pilot Adoption Committee met to review the instructional materials. After careful discussion and evaluation, the Committee is recommending StudySync for adoption as the LVJUSD instructional curriculum for English Language Arts/English Language Development in both middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12).

The StudySync instructional materials are available for public viewing in the Curriculum Department at our District office.

Fiscal Impact The instructional materials will be purchased out of restricted Lottery Funds, sale of property funds, and our District-established budget for instructional materials using Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) funds. The estimated cost for the 6-12 instructional materials and professional development (StudySync) is $2,000,000 and consumable materials will be “gratis” for eight years.
