Bicycle Technology DRAFT 4.11.19.pdf
Quick Summary / Abstract: Staff will present one new course for consideration and approval.
Background: The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) is committed to developing courses that provide students with a wide-range of opportunities to prepare students to “contribute and thrive in a changing world.” Our Board of Education encourages updating and creating new courses that are engaging to our students and prepare them for success in the 21st Century. The new course includes the California State Standards and supports students in their pursuit of college and career readiness.
Status We strive to remain responsive in meeting student and parent requests for rigorous college preparatory coursework, career technical education, and elective opportunities that will prepare our students for multiple options beyond high school. We collaborate closely with our high school teachers and administrators to keep our current courses updated and new courses prepared for Board approval.

In an effort to provide students with exposure to career technical skill development, while earning University of California/California State University (UC/CSU) approved elective credit, the following new elective course is being presented for consideration and approval.

New Course:

Bicycle Technology is designed to introduce students to career pathways within the bicycle industry and prepare them for positions as bicycle technicians/mechanics and/or in sales. Areas to be covered include career preparation and development (academic planning, portfolios, job interviewing, resumes, etc.), introduction to small business operations (sales and merchandising, customer service, inventory control, paper controls, point of sales systems, etc.), and technical/mechanical skill development. Guest speakers and field trips to local related businesses further expose students to various opportunities available within the expanding cycling industry including: engineering, fabrication, graphic art/design, sales, marketing, film production, journalism and more. In partnership with local businesses, students will repair and refurbish bicycles as a community service project. Opportunities for work-based learning, internships, apprenticeships, and employment are available for students.

Fiscal Impact Instructional materials will be purchased from our District-established Instructional Materials budget using Local Control Funding Formula dollars.
