Quick Summary / Abstract:
Background: The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) is committed to developing courses that provide students with a wide-range of opportunities to prepare students to “contribute and thrive in a changing world.” Our Board of Education encourages updating and creating new courses that are engaging to our students and prepare them for success in the 21st Century. This new course includes the California State Standards and supports students in their pursuit of college and career readiness.
Status As we strive to remain competitive in meeting student and parent requests for rigorous college preparatory coursework, career technical education, and elective opportunities that will prepare students for multiple options beyond high school, we collaborate closely with our high school teachers and administrators to keep our current courses updated and new courses prepared for Board approval.

In an effort to provide students with the opportunity to extend their orchestral knowledge and performance skills to the advanced level, the following new course is being presented for consideration and approval:

New Course:

Chamber Orchestra with Honors is a yearlong, ensemble-based course designed for students who desire to obtain an in-depth study of instrumental music performance. Students will receive advanced instruction in instrumental development and technique, advanced sight-reading, and music theory. A wide variety of music genres and orchestral repertory will be presented. Students will learn stylistic interpretation, performance practices, critical analysis and observation techniques, aesthetic sensitivity, and assume advanced leadership responsibilities. Students will also learn advanced ear training, pitch discrimination, and tonal blend and balance to perfect the total sound of the group. Members of this class will participate in solo and ensemble playing. Performance is a major component of this class. Material and repertory are directly related to performance and attendance at all performances is mandatory. This class tours yearly and participates in music festivals and competitions, which are graded and rated. Additionally, in order to differentiate this course from the general string orchestra class and meet an honors level of curriculum, students will be expected to complete a series of in-class and after-school requirements.
Fiscal Impact Instructional materials will be purchased from our District-established Instructional Materials budget using Local Control Funding Formula dollars.
