AP Spanish Language and Culture DRAFT 4.10.19.pdf
Quick Summary / Abstract: Staff will present one updated course for consideration and approval.
Background: The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) is committed to developing courses that provide students with a wide-range of opportunities to prepare students to “contribute and thrive in a changing world.” Our Board of Education encourages updating and creating new courses that are engaging to our students and prepares them for success in the 21st Century. The updated course includes the California State Standards and supports students in their pursuit of college and career readiness.
Status We strive to remain responsive in meeting student and parent requests for rigorous college preparatory coursework, career technical education, and elective opportunities that will prepare our students for multiple options beyond high school. We collaborate closely with our high school teachers and administrators to keep our current courses updated and new courses prepared for Board approval.

The Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish Language and Culture course is being revised to align with the World Language Standards and to better prepare our students for the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam. In the process, the course description has been updated to reflect the New College Board format. The following updated course is being presented for consideration and approval:

Updated Course:

The AP Spanish Language and Culture course is a rigorous course taught primarily in Spanish that requires students to improve their proficiency across the three modes of communication. Throughout the course, students will focus on the integration of authentic resources including online print, audio, and audiovisual resources; traditional print resources that include literature, essays, and magazine and newspaper articles; and a combination of visual/print resources such as charts, tables, and graphs. The goal is to provide a diverse learning experience. Students communicate using rich, advanced vocabulary and linguistic structures as they build proficiency in all three modes of communication (presentational, interpretive and interpersonal) toward the pre-advanced level. Central to communication is the following premise from the Curriculum Framework: When communicating, students in the AP Spanish Language and Culture course demonstrate an understanding of the culture(s), incorporate interdisciplinary topics (connections), make comparisons between the native language and the target language and between cultures (comparisons), and use the target language in real-life settings (communities).
Fiscal Impact Instructional materials will be purchased from our District-established Instructional Materials budget using Local Control Funding Formula dollars.
